Moroccan
Mothers

Marjolein Busstra & Rebekka van Hartskamp

In search of the story behind the hoody

Recently, Marjolein Busstra was harassed in the street by a group of Moroccan boys. In an attempt to vent them off, she grabbed her phone and took a photo. The young man that was coming at her, quickly pulled his hoody over his head and Marjolein took off. Ironically, the resulting image is exactly the kind of stereotypical image that is often used in the media to represent an entire group of people.

In collaboration with Rebekka van Hartskamp, she started thinking about a way to counter this widespread media image. The way that Moroccan boys are often depicted in the media, they seem to be on their own. You hear little about their families, specifically, their mothers. This project gives the perspective of these women and attempts to create a dialogue about the stigmatizing image of Moroccan boys.
